Painting not required? I'd say that's the only thing I don't like. You know I love the rest of it. I just think for a 2-day event that it's a showcase for the hobby and that having a painted army (even if it sucks) is part of that hobby.

It is for some. Not for others. We incentivize painting with awards and if I do a Renaissance man award if will indeed include painting as well meaning a significant portion of the available winnings will be tied to painting prowess. I've never seen a TO enforce painted only at a GT anyway. The last two I participated in required painting and then I was looking at gray models on the other side of the table. Are we going to kick these people out? People who aren't interested in painting are going to slap three colors on their models or show up with codex gray anyway. I prefer a carrot not a stick for painting enforcement, and I also want the best possible armies on the table. A painting requirement can sometimes compromise that and I really don't want it to.

I personally think some TO's should kick people out for not having a painted army at an event if the rules say painted. Have it clearly labeled that your entry is also forfiet should you show up with an unpainted army (army, not a single model). But that's just me. Maybe it's my GW GT experience and growing up in the 2nd-3rd edition mindset but I can only remember a single unpainted army at a GW GT and it was because the guy's entire army had gotten lost in transit. He borrowed an unbuilt kroot army from a friend and built and primered it the night before. Call me old fashioned :)I want competitive but I also want bigger events to be hobby showcases.

As a side note I only saw a single unpainted army at Nova that did the 3 color dot thing. Most people painted furiously to finish their armies for the event.
